Canadian lottery scam surfaces in North Dakota

Monday, July 03, 2006 posted 11:50 AM EDT

FARGO, N.D. - A bogus lottery scam originating in Canada has surfaced in North Dakota, authorities say.

The Cass County sheriff's office and a bank in Valley City say they have received reports of the scam, which involves a counterfeit check sent to a targeted person who supposedly has won a lottery through a random drawing.

The person is instructed to cash the check and send the money back to pay taxes on the lottery winnings. Officials say the person ends up losing about $3,900 when the check bounces.

"People need to be alert about anything they receive through the mail purporting to be a lottery, accompanied by a check," said Jan Eggerts, a banking supervisor in Valley City
