Public warned of lottery scam

Thursday, August 09, 2007 posted 10:14 AM EDT

Niagara Regional Police are warning residents about a new lottery scam involving fraudulent cheques.

Police say the scam involves cheques being sent to people of up to $2,500.

The information accompanying the cheque tells people they have won a substantially larger amount of money, and the first cheque is to cover the cost of international clearance fees.

They're instructed to deposit the cheque and contact a claim agent who will then send the prize money to a destination of the "winner's" choice.

Police are warning people that the cheques are fraudulent, and if they're deposited the money will be deducted from their accounts.

Police are advising people to ignore the scam, since a legitimate lottery organization would not provide a cheque in advance of the winning money.
