Chesterville couple help to expose lottery scam

Monday, March 05, 2007 posted 12:15 PM EST

CHESTERVILLE -- A Chesterville couple decided to turn over to police a scam letter they received that said they had won a $50,000 lottery from the Bahamas.

Their suspicion aroused, they brought the letter to their bank and were advised to notify the Maine State Police, said Trooper Scott Stevens.

He said the letter, reportedly from a financial institution in the Bahamas, had no return address but had an Ontario postmark.

"The letter had an enclosed check made out to them with directions to deposit it into their bank account," Stevens said.

The directions included a phone number and the name of a person who would tell the couple how to receive their "prize" if they first sent the $1,980 back to the Bahamas.

Both Stevens and a State Police supervisor called the Canadian phone number on two different days. When they identified themselves as police officers, the man who answered hung up.

"I have heard of scams like this and we just need to keep reminding people not to fall for them and send money," Stevens said.
