Lottery Scam Promises Big Money

BROOMFIELD, Colorado -- When Noelle Schneider and her husband opened the letter postmarked from Canada, they were immediately
suspicious.
It was allegedly from the Atlantic Lottery Corporation and said that Noelle had won $262,000.
To claim her winnings, the letter said she must send the taxes via western union in the amount of $2,850.
While the letter looked bogus, the couple said the check that came with it did not.
The check was made out to Noelle Schneider in the amount of $4,922.
Noelle said, "because of the check I thought it was legitimate."
We had a bank manager examine the check.
He said it was likely printed on real check stock and passed the security tests most bank workers are trained to screen for.
Our expert says any person who receives a check from someone they don't know should call the bank on the check to verify
the funds before trying to cash it.
The attorney general's office says criminals are adapting to security measures and lottery scams are becoming more sophisticated.
That's why consumers must remember, if it looks to good to be true, it probably is.
